I've been trying out some new stuff...

New plate and platter using a paper resist technique with under glazes to create the imagery. The oval platter, or boat as I'm calling it, is a new shape for me that I'm really excited about.

I'm starting to combine decals and under glazes to create more of an atmosphere for my decal animals to live in and interact in.

The first time I made this jar was a couple weeks ago in one of my pottery classes at Artspace. I was trying to find a way to teach kids how to make jars using hump molds, and this is what I came up with.

Upgrading to a new kiln

So, my first kiln served me well, but as time has gone on this year I have found the need for a larger kiln. Too many pots, Too many shows, and not enough kiln. I found a used L&L kiln on Craigslist that actually belonged to a well loved local potter and teacher in the Raleigh area before she passed away. I bought the kiln from her husband and he generously threw-in extra stuff like: under glazes, brushes, wheels for large buckets, and lots of kiln shelves and posts.

The next step.... First of all I had to get it home. It weighs 255 lbs. A friend lent us his strength and his El Camino as he helped my husband deliver it to my patio.

I wasn't ready.... This kiln is a computer kiln, unlike my previous manual kiln, this kiln has lots of electronic stuff. There were several stressful weeks as my husband Mike and I got a crash course in electronics. We couldn't get the kiln to turn on so we had to open it up, go through all the wires, do live testing, and replace the transformer and the relays. This is all well expected since the kiln was last fired in 2001.

It's big..... Yes it looks bigger, yes it is twice the cubic feet as my old one, but a swear I can fit 3 times more pots in it!!! Since it's big it takes more power. We had to upgrade my electrical cord to handle the extra power as well as change the outlet. With the old kiln I routed the cord to the dryer outlet, but that wasn't enough power for the new kiln. So I now have to rout the kiln cord to the stove, meaning the stove is out of commission for around 12-15 hours at a time. Inconvenient, but a necessary sacrifice for my pots. Also, since it is bigger we had to extend the patio deck above us to give the kiln more rain shelter.

It works....After all of that it finally works! I know I'm crazy but the first firing I did with it was a full glaze fire. Nope, I didn't even test it first, I just turned it right on (I watched it like a hawk though). All is well and my stuff turned out perfect. Now I'm in the process of selling the old one.

This is how much stuff I got out of my second firing. That's a lot of bisqued pots. I've got a lot of glazing to do.

Kids Summer Pottery Camp

I think I had just as much fun as the kids did during my first summer pottery camp. I had 3 kids (8-10 yrs old) at my home studio for 5 days, 2 hours a day. In that time we made a jar, a shell dish, an animal sculpture, and threw a cup on the wheel. They finished them off with colorful under glazes. More pictures to come once the work goes through the final glaze firing. There was such talent in their little fingers! I'm definitely going to do this next year.

So I just got back from a two week workshop to find my flower blooming! How exciting!

Cactus story: We have had this cactus for years while living in Maine, and on the move down to North Carolina it had gotten heavily damaged. Now it seems while I have been gone it has doubled in size and even started to FLOWER! I didn't even know this cactus could flower. The power of the sun is amazing.

P.S. I didn't even plant this plant that is pictured in front. It came out of nowhere and is growing faster than anything. It looks like some kind of bamboo/weed hybrid. I'm leaving it for now to see what it does.

Penland

I just got back from a two week workshop at Penland School of Crafts in NC with Kristen Kieffer as my instructor. What a BLAST!!! I learned sooooo much and made some great friends. I made plans with two friends that I made on the trip (Stacey & Tricia) to go to Harry Potter Land at Disney world this January.

Below are pictures of Penland, their clay studio, some stuff I made while I was there, and Kristen Kieffer working on one of her Corset Vases.

Garden

My flower garden is starting to grow!!! Maybe I can put some of them in my new vases and planters once they bloom.

I've also started putting tiles in my garden and recycling clay on the patio.

New Pottery Items: Flower Box & Giant Clam Dish

I just created some new designs! The first one is a flower box, or I also think it would make a great herb box for the kitchen. To make it I used a hump mold for the tray, attached the feet, threw 2 cylinders on the wheel and cut them in half to make the corners, and then used a press mold to create the texture block in the center.

This one I'm calling a Giant Clam Pedestal Dish. I used a hump mold for the body, threw a foot on the wheel for it, and then attached a long flat coil for the rim.
